Alma Máter

In 1969, Fernando Almela and Alberto Solsona began a romantic relationship that lasted until Solsona’s death in 1988 due to complications from AIDS. Between 1972 and 1977, they also formed an artistic partnership, creating joint works such as Espejo de Anita, which was first presented at Madrid’s SEN gallery in 1974. Their work from this period draws on the language of pop art, especially in its use of images from the media and advertising, while adopting a critical approach similar to that of Equipo Crónica.

Solsona’s individual production lies within the 1970s trend for a return to painting, approached from a postmodern perspective that revisits the visual memory of the historical avant-garde. His work incorporates references to surrealism and Picabia’s Dada machines, as well as the aesthetics of comics and illustration, disciplines that were booming during that decade and to which he also devoted himself independently.
