In the late 1990s, Carmela García began presenting her work on feminism and sexual dissidence. Her photographs o!er women an unprecedented space from which to break with the imaginary of femininity, historically constructed by the heteropatriarchal system, opening up the possibility of liberation through utopian narratives created by and for them.
In Estudio, García opens her own studio and invites a group of women to participate in creating the scene that will later be photographed.
The artist’s studio, once an artistic genre consecrated by the male gaze, based on passive representation of the feminine, is reinterpreted here in a restorative gesture: women become agents of their own representation and history through a shared fiction that generates a performative space where sisterhood, complicity and intimacy are interwoven.
