Susy Gómez held her first solo exhibition in the Joan Miró Foundation’s Espai 13 in 1993, featuring textile and clothing works. Throughout her career, she has experimented with painting, sculpture, photography, performance art and video, creating an autobiographical body of work that reflects on female identity. In 1994, Gómez was selected by critic José Luis
Brea for the exhibition Anys 90. Distància zero (The 90s: Zero Distance), which sought to show the need for art to resist its trivialisation and neutralisation through di!use aestheticising.
Sin título. Montaña Cavall Bernat, cala Sant Vicenç, Mallorca was created specifically for her solo exhibition at Turin’s Giorgio Persano Gallery, which has a long tradition of exhibiting Arte Povera. It alludes to the memory of her native landscape, which shapes the psyche with a sense of belonging. The imposing orographic profile unfolds across the width of the room like an obsessive form, an insurmountable boundary on the horizon.
In 1994, critic Manel Clot referred to the concept of ‘subject’ in Gómez’s work as a kind of psychological need to reaffirm vital principles: ‘The sphere of feelings, deeply present in the artist’s subjectivity and mapped out in the orographic profile that is the work, speaks of an emotional landscape’.
