Between 1916 and 1918, Joan Miró made a series of works he would describe as “Fauve” owing to the lyrical strength of the bold colouring. Notable among these pieces is the landscape series he produced in different towns in Tarragona, including Siurana, the place that gives this painting its title. In the work, the aforementioned Fauve influences are joined by others such as Paul Cézanne, Cubism and, to a lesser degree, Futurism. With this artistic grounding, Miró was able to create his own pictorial language, which in this instance borders on abstraction. He exhibited the piece at his first solo show in Galerías Dalmau in Barcelona in 1918, alongside other works from his period prior to Surrealism.
