Vicios modernos (Ilustración) (Modern Vices [Illustration])

Carlos Sánchez Pérez, known artistically as Ceesepe, was a key figure in the Spanish underground scene of the 1970s, linked to alternative comics in Barcelona. Influenced by Robert Crumb and Anglo-Saxon pop art, until 1979 he published in magazines such as El Víbora, Star and Ajoblanco. Splitting his time between Barcelona and Madrid, in 1976 he founded the Cascorro Factory with photographer Alberto García-Alix, based at a stall in Madrid’s Rastro flea market. Ceesepe dove eagerly into the nascent Madrid La Movida, collaborating with musicians, filmmakers and writers, while contributing decisively to building its visual identity.

He maintained a close friendship with Pedro Almodóvar, for whom he designed the posters for Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón (Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls on the Heap, 1980) and La ley del deseo (Law of Desire, 1987). His paintings, illustrations and collages combine influences from pop art, Marc Chagall, German expressionism and the aesthetics of underground comics, where nightlife, bars, eroticism and music comprise essential elements of his artistic imagination.
