COLLECTION CONTEMPORARY ART: 1975-PRESENT

The new presentation of the Museo Reina Sofía Collections occupies the entire fourth floor of the Sabatini Building to tell the history of art from Spain over the last 50 years. The new narrative, which aims to highlight the contribution of Spanish contemporary art, takes as its starting point the turbulent 1970s, which help us understand the present as a collective construction: the democratic space forged from the beginning of the Spanish Transition period to the present day.

COLLECTION. CONTEMPORARY ART: 1975-PRESENT is the result of intense collective work that began in 2023, under the direction of Manuel Segade, and will be open to the public from 18 February. Taking into account the very specific sensibilities that underpin society and contemporary art, this narrative reflects the proliferation of discourses, the diversity of technical media and, above all, the material richness and meanings of contemporary artistic practices in Spain and abroad.

The new exhibition on the fourth floor of the Sabatini building displays well-known works from the Reina Collections, as well as recent acquisitions and very contemporary pieces by young artists, with a special focus on how the Spanish art scene has reflected the different social and institutional transformations of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

The new presentation also changes the way the Museo's collections are displayed to the public, thanks to a more accessible, dynamic and educational itinerary that places the visitor at the centre of the museum experience.
