Pello Irazu was associated with the New Basque Sculpture group of the 1980s. He had a solo show in Espai 10 at Barcelona’s Miró Foundation in 1988 and participated that same year in Espagne 87. Dynamiques et interrogations (Spain 87: Dynamics and Questions) at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris The artist has approached painting and drawing with the same interests as sculpture, based on an abstract constructive concept in which the dynamics of forms and their spatial qualities are linked to personal experiences.
In 1988, Irazu explained that ‘the relationships between the parts that make up the sculpture have to do with this sentimental bond, but I did not intend to represent it’. He drew on the critical tradition of Jorge Oteiza’s work, taking into account the historical reference of Constructivism and Suprematism, but above all seeking the spatial dynamics of sculpture, in which the internal structure and external box are connected. He works from a direct process in technique, where colour serves as a surface for the articulation of planes.
