Open Chair is a project which stems from a collaboration between Museo Reina Sofía and the Bachelor’s Degree in Art at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), an academic programme organised jointly by both institutions and set up to build an expanded and connected community of student artists as part of a network.

The project shares one of the bedrocks of the Bachelor’s Degree in Art, which, beyond considering the artwork as a mere subject of study, conceives of artistic research as a space with which to generate thought. A positioning which means defending the epistemological potential of creation and curatorship in dialogue with multiple kindred methodologies. Therefore, the field of art is conceived as a space to create critical thought based on practice, where theory is related horizontally to praxis, rather than validating or translating external art-making and knowledge.

The Chair is framed inside a context of artistic training defined by diverse languages and by its openness towards debates characterising the art circuit, seeking to work as a sphere of disciplinary, thematic and epistemological impetus which questions academic devices and their relationship with frameworks of Eurocentric thought.
