Held on 22 nov 2022

In conjunction with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, held on 25 November, the company Teatro Sin Papeles (Undocumented Theatre) presents Las latinas son… (Latin Women Are…) in the Museo, inside the framework of proposals by the Museo Situado assembly.

The work, written, directed and performed by women from diffeent countries of Abya Yala — a term used by indigenous people in Latin America to refer to the continent — depicts racist, sexist and discriminatory situations suffered by the members of the company for being migrant women in Spain.

With a view to changing the narratives constructed around them by a racist and patriarchal society, this work puts forward theatre as a tool for social transformation and awareness-raising, as well as being a space of denouncement, listening, resistance, political action and healing. In the words of its director, Camila Pinzón: “This work aims to put a face behind cold statistics and break stereotypes and Eurocentric gazes that paternalise”.

Teatro Sin Papeles is a company that was created in 2018 to welcome actresses and actors with migrant life paths. Since its foundation, it has activated different performances in cultural spaces with a close connection to its reality, for instance Teatro del Barrio (Lavapiés, Madrid) and Ateneu del Raval (Barcelona). Its previous stage pieces include El sueño es vida (Dreaming Is Life, 2021), a monologue which relates migration to the dramas of world literature, Bajo el mismo sol (Under the Same Sun, 2020) and ¡Boza! El grito que derrumba los muros (Boza! The Shout that Brings Down the Walls, 2018), works which investigate the stories of the company’s actors in their migration to Spain.
